Heathy and Holistic Inside and Out…Don't Drink Coffee While Riding an Elliptical.

Rose Geranium.

Rose Geranium

This post is rather indulgent on my part, since I am going to talk about my favorite and least favorite scents.  I am working on my second cup of coffee this morning, and after staring at the Badger Balm Soap Page on their website, my mind started mulling over the scents I like and dislike.

*slurps coffee*  So lets begin.

Lavender:  Hands down personal favorite.  If a product has Lavender EO, that’s almost an instant sell for me.  That being said, fake lavender scents just offend my nose.  One of the first natural products I ever purchased was a Lavender Lip Balm and I was hooked.  Lavender EO roll ons for stress and headaches is another product that gets me giddy.  My first one was from a company up in Washington State.  I purchased it a couple of years ago and loved it.  After trying to remember who the company was, I remembered:  Island Thyme Botanical Body Care and Artisan Soaps up in Orcas Island, WA.  I was completely and totally hooked with the idea of smearing lavender (and peppermint) all over my face.  From there I found Lil’s Lavender and discovered their awesome smelling lavender lotion.  They also have an amazing Lavender peppermint headache roll on.

I have to laugh at myself, here.  Back in the day I spent hours on-line trying to find local, lavender products.  My how times have changed.  I would still recommend both companies, and that Lil’s Lavender lotion is amazing.

Rose Geranium: for a soap this is my favorite.

Lavender Rose:  Kettle Care has an amazing fragrance oil I purchased several years ago and I still have a bit left.  Its packaged in an amber-colored bottle and still smells amazing.  (Side Note:  Their Joint Ease Lotion with Arnica is the absolute amazing product.  I have arthritis in my neck and this stuff eases the sickening pain I get).

Another side note:  Kettle Care was my first experience with a home based industry and the amazing, healthy products that comes from such an industry.  I have been hooked every since.

Peppermint:  I have a love-hate relationship with Peppermint EO.  I love how much it clears my head from headaches or sinus pressure, how peppermint tea makes my stomach feel better, but other than that, I am not a fan.  Its sad, because I have two huge containers of Heather’s Tummy Care Peppermint Tea for when the IBS starts.  I cannot stand peppermint tea, having drank way too much of it over the course of my life, but it works.  I deal with peppermint because it works.  Owens Acres Headache Balm (thanks, Laura!) is the best for my sinus and regular headaches (feels great on the back of my neck) and I use it all the time but still, peppermint.  *sigh*

That being said, I simply cannot stand lip products with Peppermint OR Vanilla.  OK, so I have a weakness for Owens Acres Peppermint Lip Balm but its super strong, strong enough to clear my nose; but a “flavoring” of Peppermint in a lip stick or a lip gloss usually makes me hit the “back” button on my browser.  I once found an amazing lip color.  I mean, amazing!  I had to have it, the color was the color, if you know what I mean.  I checked out the ingredients, realized it was flavored with a peppermint-vanilla “blend”, and moved on to something else.  Seriously, folks.  Can’t stand it.  I still have dreams of that lipstick color.

One more, and then I will stop.  I have an aversion to body products that smell like baked goods.  Chocolate cake soap?  Sugar Cookie scrub?  I just…no.

So there you have it.  My likes and dislikes.  I realize I am picky and maybe a bit shallow in my choices, but hey.  I’m set in my ways, and I can thank Mom for that.  So tell me, what scents do you like/dislike?

This is What Happens When I Blog After Work

2010 05 22 - 6724 - Jim Thorpe - Fruit Smoothie

What makes me healthy isn’t going to necessarily make everyone else healthy. If I have my friends homemade soy fruit smoothie with added protein powder I feel like a million dollars.  It doesn’t mean that works for everyone.  Not everyone drinks soy.  Soy, to me, is an acquired taste, but since I have been drinking soy for as long as I can remember, it doesn’t bother me.  Especially now that I know what milk does to my body.

Its not a good thing. *shudders*

One of my biggest reason for having this blog is to show how we can take charge of our own health, by educating and making aware of what’s out there.  I learn from reading and trying things…no one could have EVER told me a gluten free foundation was going to save my life.  Nor that drinking tea on a regular basis would make me feel better, or that stretching would get my body to loosen up.

I don’t sit here and preach that I know it all.  I don’t.  I also don’t sit here and pretend I am a perfect weight, for I am not.  I just found out how to listen to my own body, my entire body.  Health isn’t just what you put in your body, there’s also you mind, your heart, the entire being.  One thing effects another.

Its a journey, for sure.  So far, I feel better, but that’s not the biggest reward.  The reward comes from educating.  That puts a smile on my face.  I consider myself blessed because there are others out there like me who want to grow old in the most fabulous way.  I don’t want to be a statistic that ends up part of an article on CNN.  How’s that for motivation?

So to my readers:  enjoy and live.  Have a big cup of tea, or a delicious smoothie, or heck, even a cup of coffee.  Wow, that sounds really good right now, even at almost 1 AM.

Owens Acres Herbal Teas for Travel…and Work?

Owens Acres Headache Travel Tea TinEach day I work I spend 2 hours and 80 miles in my car.  Sometimes, when I get to work my nerves or gone, or almost gone.  Not complaining at all, I chose to live so far away from the city, but still the traffic, other drivers, road conditions, weather, tend to make me less cheery than usual.

I drink Owens Acres tea on a regular basis, going so far as to keep a Zip Loc Baggie of tea with a few of her self fill tea bags in my purse for therapeutic purposes while I am sitting at my desk conversing with humanity.  Now with this absolutely adorable little tins, and teas for specific ailments, no more baggies for me.

Owens Acres Jet Lag Travel Tea

There’s five of these wonderful, caffeine free teas.  Headache Tea, Serenity Tea, Jet Lag, Upset Stomach, Headache, and Sweet Dreams (I wouldn’t recommend Sweet Dreams while at work, seriously you’ll be beneath your desk snoozing) all in round, screw-top 2 ounce tins at $3.95 each.

I get those “work” headaches, you know,”those” headaches.  My usual relief is a quick trip to the local Starbucks for a caffeine infusion (if I have the time, I will ask for a Gold Coast pour-over) but if I find my break is no where in sight I will run into the kitchen for a quick cup of hot water.

Owens Acres Upset Stomach Travel Tea

IfI get stressed out my stomach gets horribly upset, and in that case coffee is the last thing on my mind.  The job I do is stressful as well as relentless at times, and anythianything that works to keep the calm is welcome.  I am thinking the same with travel, after dealing with airports, planes, checking in, hotels, humanity…yeah, sometimes you just need to give yourself a break.  For those of us who don’t travel, we need breaks as well.

All five types of tea are available together for $19 and they will throw in a charmed tea ball, you get to pick the tea ball you would like out of many.

Product Giveaways. My Opinion.

cup of coffee

Image via Wikipedia

This is a topic myself and Natural Beauty Vixen discussed at our latest visit with one another, although meetings of the minds is more like it.  I like to think we’re out to change the world, but then again I have always had an ego about myself.  🙂 Oh, and these reflections are my own based on our conversation.  She has nothing to do with it  🙂

Anyway, we’ve been around the internet and follow other blogs and the like, and one thing I have notice, among many things, are product giveaways, especially to gather more members to a blog or community or the like.  I have seen for myself a promise of a wonderful product giveaway, seen the traffic such a thing has generated, and see all those folks who signed up vanish once the giveaway is over.

Don’t get me wrong, I love free stuff.  Who doesn’t?  There’s nothing wrong with giveaways, I think it is a very kind and generous thing to do, but I do not think its a good idea for generating hits on a website, Facebook, or whatever social media you can think of.  All its doing is generating short term traffic and how many of these winners actually stick around and participate on the blog/in the community, and isn’t that the goal we are striving for?

Granted, I get a bit huffy when I come across giveaways and they are for new sign ups only.  I think to myself hey, I am here, every day, contributing and reposting on Facebook and Twitter and I can’t enter?  Shallow, for sure.  I don’t disagree with that at all, I can be as shallow as a puddle of water at times, but how about we folks who stick around and play in the sandbox on a regular basis?

As well, I like to think folks come to my blog and visit my Facebook page because I have something interesting to say which touches some part of them.  I don’t want traffic based on what I am handing out, I want traffic because of my words, my ideas, my ramblings, me.  Egotistical?  Could be.  Fantasy world?  I won’t tell you about the unicorn beneath my desk.  He kicks and has bad gas.

It breaks my heart to see communities and bloggers sell themselves short like this, and to see their disappointment when all these folks who subscribed for the giveaway vanish once its over.  I believe content is the key to serious readers and subscribers.  Yes, I offer a discount code over at Owens Acres, but I am not giving anything away and my readers make their own decision to go visit that site or not.  As well, you don’t have to subscribe to get the discount code.  Its simply there if anyone chooses to use it.   Owens Acres is very generous that way.

In the same vein, my Facebook account is linked to this blog.  I have a personal FB account, and before I got everything figured out and was able to separate my blog postings to its own FB page, my “friends” were reading everything, from my blog to my sometimes unholy discussions with my coworkers.  My Holistic Chick FB page is growing…slowly, and yes I do a fist pump when I see someone else “liked” my page, but I can’t belittle myself and my readers by bribing them for “likes” with a product giveaway.

Maybe I am too old fashioned.  Maybe thinking the written word is going to make a difference isn’t forward thinking in this day and age, that educating the masses is only saved for video and handouts.  I created this blog because I was very serious in my intentions of living better and healthier, and I believe my words have depth and meaning, and I am going to stick with that.

Now, about this stinky unicorn beneath my desk…

Eve Organics Lip Products

Eve Organics Brandy Lip Stick

I was the luckiest girl in the world when I received three lip products in the mail from Eve Organics.  Happiness!

I have the lip gloss in Miami Sunrise, which is described on the website as a “matte, bright coral”.  It may sound pink but it isn’t.  On my warm skin tone it looks amazing.

The lip stick in Brandy, which is a plummy brown.  Very subtle in color but rocks your lips.

The lip liner in Sedona Clay, which I can only describe as a deep chocolate-red brown.  A great neutral color that supports the Brandy lip color yet adds a brownish warmth to the Miami Sunrise.

A blurb about the lip gloss:  I have seen and tried lip glosses, both healthy and unhealthy, that claim to be “not sticky”.  I have yet to try a lip gloss that hasn’t passed the “not sticky” test, until now.  Eve Organics lip gloss isn’t really like a gloss, its more like a lip creme.  There’s no stickiness at all, there’s no blops, and you don’t feel like you’ve eaten an entire basket of greasy french fries.  It also doesn’t feel like its all over your face after speaking a couple of sentences.  I hate that about some glosses, they are so slick they feel like you’ve eaten a plate of ribs (no, I am not hungry).

A quick word about the liner:  this was my first “healthy” lip liner and there’s no reason to go back to a n OTC liner:  it performs just as well as any other “unhealthy” lip liner I have used.

The lipstick:  I have tried several mineral lipsticks, and I’ve had issues with every single one.  Part of my problem is that I cannot get past the performance of drugstore lip stick.  I know its all those unsavory ingredients that make the OTC lip sticks do so well in regards to color, wear and the like, but so far I haven’t seen an adequate replacement.  I don’t know if I ever will, to be honest.  I like the Brandy, though, because it has good color, I don’t have to cake it on to get color, and with the lip liner I get pretty good wear out of it.

The ultimate winner was wearing the liner with the gloss.  I got great color, great wear, no stickiness, and a lot of compliments.

I was wistfully thinking about how lovely it would be to have a orangey-red lipstick, to match the sweater the most amazing Leah from Etniq Minerals wore during an event.  Nessa listened and created the most lovely lipstick!

She created Blaze’n, this amazing color.  Its hard to tell but it the most amazing burnt o

Checking out my new blogging program?

I downloaded Crysanth WebStory, since a blogger friend of mine said she used Life Writer as a platform before posting.  I was wondering if I was missing something, because I always wrote directly into the blog program!  I guess this is supposed to be easier and more user friendly?

We will see?

Orchard Delight Tea from Owens Acres…SO GOOD.

Fleur d'hibiscus

Hibiscus Flower

I got my Owens Acres order yesterday, and I got absolutely lovely things, of which I will discuss at length when I have more time, but I couldn’t wait to blog about her Orchard Delight Tea.  I got home froom work and brewed up a nice steamy cup in  my ingenuiTEA Teapot and when I poured it into my cup the smell made my eyes open wide.  Fruity, with a hint of something warm, there’s chamomile in it but I swear I scented a tiny touch of ginger.

One of the nifty things about the ingenuiTea Teapot is that you can watch your tea steep.  Floating around with the flower leaves were chunks of apples, pears and apricots (which I ate after my tea was through steeping) and I mean REAL DRIED CHUNKS.

I strained my tea into my mug and took a healthy sniff:  I got a ton of hibiscus, which is always a winner for me, a touch of the chamomile and all that wonderful fruit.  I like my tea strong, it brewed up like a thick burgundy wine, for some reason I thought of mulled wine.  Hmmm.

The tea is blended perfectly.  There’s not too much of one thing, and everything comes together in an absolute beautiful flavor.  This tea isn’t loaded down with ingredients, there’s the dried Pears, Apricots and Apples, then Hibiscus Flowers, Lemon Verbena and Chamomile. Its warming and so very soothing and delicious.  It was perfect before bed, hot, but I could imagine it cold over ice with a touch of sugar (I like sugar in my tea, brings out the flavors) as well.

Check out to check out the ingredients, and see how healing and antioxidant rich this tea is.
